Iconic Foods

These are foods that originated in Australia or that we Australians call our own. They can be said to define the nature of Australian cooking until recent decades, when cooking has become international and cosmopolitan.

A recent (2010) survey of 1000 people across Australia produced the following results. They were asked: what is our national dish?

  • Meat pie 37%.
  • Roast lamb 28%.
  • Lamington 12 %.
  • Pavlova 11%.
  • Pasta bake 1% (where did they get that idea from?)
  • Uncommitted 11%.
