History Glossary of Terms

This list explains some of the words that might unfamiliar to non-Australians.

  • Billy = Round metal container with straight vertical sides and wire handle. Used for making tea on an open fire. Can also be used for cooking stews and soups. Is often an empty fruit can or tin.
  • Flour = plain flour. We also have self-raising flour, which is plain flour with baking powder added.
  • Golden Syrup = by-product of the production of sugar from sugar cane. It is a thick, dark gold, very sweet liquid. Maple syrup or honey can be substituted, but more of those ingredients would be needed to attain the same level of sweetness.
